Drafting Wooden Boat Plans

It’s very easy to draft wooden boat plans.  Along with the required tools you need a certain amount of determination and a broad mind to take corrections and suggestions in the right sense.  If you have these two qualities you surely can build that wooden boat of your dreams.

The first part of drafting wooden boat plans is to get some heavy duty cartridge paper, a few mechanical pencils and an eraser, a straight long edge, a T-square and a ruler to draw and measure the lines and shapes accurately.  These tools may seem very little but they are the main tools required for the purpose of designing a perfect boat.

These are the most important devices that you need when drafting since they allow you to make the right calculations and perfect designing.  You may think of using a pen, but it would hinder your process of designing since you can’t clean it off when you make a mistake and want to re-do the shape.

There are three main terms that you should understand very well before going in for the final designing.  One term is “overall length” which gives you the correct length of the boat from one stern to the other.
The next main term is “length on the waterline”.  This length should be shorter than the overall length because it gives the actual length of the portion of the boat that is placed in the water.
‘D’ is the last term which denotes the depth of the boat.  This is the deepest point of the boat which lies in the center.  Using these three terms you should be able to make a perfect sketch of a boat with the basic measurements given in the manual.
